From Classroom Debates to Real-World Insights:

Exploring IKEA’s Success at NBS

IKEA is a furniture design company that has always fascinated me – so it was with delight that I was part of the Newton Business School team’s themed learning on the topic of IKEA back in March of this year.

Newton Business School student debate on IKEA

On 6th March 2024, I held a case discussion class with our Year 12 students where we had a dialogue and debate on how IKEA’s careful design has led to them being so successful globally. Many interesting points were raised, from pricing strategy to user experience, and the issue of standardisation vs adaptation as IKEA (and other companies) expand their market regionally and globally.

There are many crossovers with NBS BTEC Higher National Certificate and Higher National Diploma units, such as Marketing Insights and Analytics, Business Strategy, Product and Service Development and Business and the Business Environment.

IKEA Sukhumvit Field Trip

On 7th March 2024, I led our Year 12 Newton Business School students on an educational Field Trip to IKEA Sukhumvit. The focus was on experiencing first-hand and understanding the business strategies of this global retail giant. Students had the chance to observe firsthand the practical application of concepts discussed in class, covering aspects such as cost-efficient designs, store layouts, and sustainability practices.

It was a fun experience as we travelled through the layout of IKEA Sukhumvit here in Bangkok! After the trip, students were shared a reflection template to think about the key things they learnt and picked up on during this Field Trip.

Consultant Guest Lecture

On 12th-13th March 2024, our Year 12 and Year 13 students were treated to a special guest lecture by an experienced consultant from Malaysia, Mr.Tan Choon Sung, who shared his expertise on translating vision into action, delving into topics such as commercial considerations versus aesthetic ideals. This was an extra opportunity for our students to discuss IKEA and what they have learnt.
